How to Set up an Organizational System for Your Moving Boxes

Posted on

When you are moving a great distance, being organized with your packing can make unpacking when you get to your new home easier. This is especially true when using a long-distance moving service to transport your items to your new home.

Pack the Essentials for Each Room in Clear Plastic Tubs

For each room in your house, there are going to be items that you want to unpack and get access to before everything else. For example, in your kitchen, you are going to want to get access to your plates and bowls before you unpack your decorative platter that you primarily use only during the holidays. As another example, you are probably going to want to unpack the wires to set up your television set and surround sound before you put up all your picture frames and candles.

Packing one to two clear plastic crates for each room in your house will make it easier for your to prioritize what to unpack when you get to your new location and find the essentials that you need for setting up each room.

Pick a Color for Each Room in Your House

Next, you want to keep the boxes that go in each room of your house organized. The best way to do that is by picking a specific color of duct tape for each room in your house.

Choosing a different colored tape for each room in your house will make it easier for you to identify where each box is supposed to go. If the moving company is going to unpack the truck and put the boxes in your new house, this system makes it much simpler for them to know what boxes and furniture go in which room.

A color-coded system could work like this:

  • Red = Kitchen
  • Green = Utility Room
  • Purple = Living Room
  • Blue = Bathroom
  • Yellow = Master Bedroom
  • Pink = Kid's Room #1
  • Orange = Kid's Room #2

This visual system will make it easier to know where the boxes go and easier for you to check and make sure that all of your boxes for each room reached their final destination.

Number the Boxes

Next, for each room, you should number the boxes. Ideally, you should number the boxes in the order in which you want the boxes to be unpacked. Additionally, numbering the boxes will make it easier for you to check and make sure that all the boxes have arrived at your new home.

You can also use the numbers to create an inventory list. When allowing a moving company to move your items, it is essential that you have a detailed inventory list. The inventory list can be broken down by color for each room, then by box number, then by a list of what is actually inside of each box.

Include an Inventory List

Finally, one the side of each box and on a separate paper using the system described above, write down what is inside of each box. This will make it even easier for you to determine what is inside of each box and will help you create a detailed inventory list. A detailed inventory list will come in handy if any of your boxes turn up damaged or missing. Your inventory list will help you prove your case with the insurance company that the moving company uses.

To simplify your long distance move, try to get as detailed as possible with your organization and labeling system. Use specific colors of tape for each room in your house, number the boxes for each room and create a detailed inventory list for each box. This will help the unpacking process go smoother and will also help you keep track of your items for insurance purposes.
