3 Unique Aspects To Moving In The Fall

Posted on

If you are planning on moving your family to a new home during the fall, make sure that you plan for these three unique aspects of moving during the fall time.

#1 Transitioning Schools

If you decide to move during the fall instead of at the end of spring or during the summer when your child is out of school, your children are going to need to transition from one school to the next during the school year. This can be more complicated than transiting schools at the end of the school year.

If you have to a middle-of-the year school transition, make sure that you prepare your child for that transition. Talk to them ahead of time and keep a last-day-of-school countdown. Try to schedule a play date or party for your child with their classmates so that they can say goodbye. When your child moves to their new school, make an effort to set-up play dates during the first few months so they can connect with classmates outside of school.

Make sure that you deal with the technical side of moving schools as well. Request formal school records from your child's front office, and transfer those records to the new school. Also, ask your child's teacher to prepare an academic transition level for your child's new teacher that details what reading and math groups they are in, as well as information about areas where your child excels and needs assistance. This will help your child's new teacher better place your child within their new class.

#2 Off-Peak Prices

One of the unique aspects of moving during the fall is that you are moving during the off-peak time for moving companies. That should mean that you should pay lower prices for moving services in comparison to rates during the on-peak time, which typically runs from mid-spring through the summer.

This means that you should not just accept the first moving quote that you are given. Be sure to shop around and find out what the off-peak moving rates are in your area and what specials are offered. You should be able to save money on your moving services or pay for additional moving help, such as assistance with packing up your home, without going over your moving budget.

#3 Weather

One of the best parts of moving during the fall is that the weather is really mild. You shouldn't have to deal with extreme heat or extreme cold, which will make the physical act of moving and unpacking less stressful on your body.

However, you still need to plan for the weather. In the fall, leaves often blanket the sidewalks, which can be beautiful to look at but not safe to walk on when carrying a large box. Make sure that you rake, sweep or blow all the leaves off of your walkway as well as the driveway to make the moving process safer for you and your movers.

You also need to plan for rain. Make sure that water drains properly off of your sidewalk. Have some extra tarps or plastic coverings available to throw on top of boxes and furniture as it is moved and keep some towels out for keeping the entry way dry and drying off anything that gets wet from unexpected rain.

Moving in the fall can save you money, but it also present unique weather and school related challenges as well. Make sure that you plan for the unique aspects of moving during the fall time.
