How To Keep What You Need Close By When Moving

Posted on

When moving, you have to pack up your entire home and unpack it when you get to your new destination. However, unpacking your home is not a simple process; it could take you multiple days or weeks to completely unpack when you get to your new home, depending on how many belongings you have and how much free time you have to dedicate towards that task. That is why it is important to prioritize and keep the items that you are going to need right away close by when moving.

Pack An Overnight Bag

Before you pack up your clothing in your bedroom, you need to set aside some clothing for the moving transition period. To start with, you need to set aside a moving outfit. Your moving outfit should be clothing that you don't mind getting dirty, that fit the weather and that you can move around easily in. You are also going to want to pack an outfit to change into after the move, clothing to sleep in and an outfit for the next day. If you know that you will not be able to unpack your bedroom right away, or if you are moving long-distance, you may want to pack a suitcase with the clothing that you would need for a week and put the suitcase inside of your vehicle instead of the moving van. That way, you'll have what you need until you are able to get settled and set-up your bedroom.

Be sure to pack a bag of basic toiletry supplies as well so you don't have to run out and buy new ones when you arrive at your new home.

Keep Cleaning Supplies Out

When you get to your new home, chances are you are going to need to do a little cleaning of your new space or even clean items as you unpack them and set them up in your new house. You may also have to do a little last-minute spot cleaning as you leave your old home.

Don't pack away all of the cleaning supplies. Put a set of cleaning supplies, including a glass cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, a scrub brush, and some cleaning wipes out. It should be one of the last things you move out of your old apartment after you have given it on last look-over, and one of the first things you get out in your new home. This is another item that you may want to bring in your vehicle with you.

Store Medicine Somewhere Accessible

If you or someone in your family takes medication on a daily basis, do not pack this up inside of a box. You don't want to have to rummage through multiple boxes to find the medication you need just because you thought you would unpack your belongings faster.

Medication should be stored inside of your overnight bag and placed inside of your vehicle as you move from one home to the next. It should be somewhere easily accessible. If you have children, you may want to put your medicine inside of some sort of lock-box so that they can't access it.

Pack Essentials In Clear Plastic Bins

Finally, pack the essentials for each room in your home inside of a clear plastic bins and the rest of your belongings inside of cardboard boxes. This will make it easier for you to prioritize what to unpack in each room of your home and will make it easier for you to get to the items that you need.

For example, in your kitchen, the essential items might include things such as a set of plate, bowls, silverware and at least one pot or pan for you to cook with. For your living room, it may include things as power strip and charging cables for your various devices.
