4 Ways to Keep Dust and Dirt from Building up Inside of Your Storage Unit

Posted on

If you are using a storage unit to keep your belongings safe, you are going to want to take steps to ensure that all of your belongings do not become dusty and dirty while they wait to be used again. Here are four different things that you can do reduce the build-up of dust and dirt within your storage unit.

Place Canvas Sheets on the Floors and Walls

The first thing you need to do to protect your belongings is cover the floors and walls. Canvas sheeting will help protect your belongings from dust, dirt, moisture, and pests. It is strong and resilient and will help ensure that the surface your belongings are resting on is clean. Canvas sheeting is also referred to as canvas drop cloths. You should be able to find them at local art supply stores or home improvement stores.

Put Down Wooden Pallets

Second, on top of the canvas sheeting, you should place wooden pallets on the floor of your unit. This will ensure that none of your belongings are resting directly on the floor, where they will more easily get dirty and potentially wet due to moisture within your unit. See if any stores near you have some free wooden pallets that they are planning on throwing away. Pick them up and use them for your store unit.

Polish Your Furniture

Before putting your furniture into storage, make sure that you take good care of it. For all furniture that has a wood surface, you should apply a fresh coat of wooden furniture polish. This will help keep dust and dirt off of your furniture and also make it easier to wipe off should dust get on your furniture.

If you have furniture that has a metal surface, use a metal furniture polisher on those items. It will have the same effect the wood furniture polish has on your wood furniture.

Cover All Furniture

Don't just let your furniture sit inside of your unit, exposed to the elements. Use furniture covers to cover up all of your furniture, especially anything that has fabric on it. This will help keep the pests away from your furniture and will help ensure that any dust that builds up inside of your unit doesn't get on your furniture. That way, when you remove your furniture from your storage unit, all you need to do for your furniture to be clean is to remove the furniture cover.

If you are storing any mattresses or box-springs inside of your storage unit, cover them up with a mattress bag. Once again, this will keep both pests and dust away from your mattresses and box-springs.

Cover up Your Belongings

Finally, to keep dust off of your boxes and other belongings inside of your storage unit, cover them up. Drape extra canvas sheets, furniture pads, or bedding sheets on top of your boxes. This will help keep dust from accumulating on your belongings and will make it simple and easy to clean off the boxes when you need to move them out of your storage unit.

Finally, if you keep your belongings inside of a storage unit for a long time, it is a good idea to open up your storage unit at least twice a year to dust and clean up the place.
